Holmes and Watson navigate the urban jungle

13907653D73I am obsessed with Sherlock Holmes.  I have been since I was a child watching the black & white movies starting Basil Rathbone as the genius detective and Nigel Bruce as his faithful sidekick, Dr. John Watson.  Since then I’ve listen to countless old-time radio episodes, TV series, cartoons, and movies about the world’s greatest detective.  So when I saw Karl Bollers’ new interpretation in digital comic form I just had to pick it up.

In Watson and Holmes, Bollers moves our Victorian era detective into the future, across the pond, and makes him a black man.  S. Holmes is a private investor living New York City, Harlem to be specific.  One of his cases leads him to Convent Emergency Clinic where he crosses paths with John Watson, medical intern and war vet.

Watson and Holmes works because much like the BBC series Sherlock, it manages to modernize the classic detective while still keeping many of the original aspects.  There still is a Mrs. Hudson, the Baker Street irregulars, and I can only assume in the future a Lestrade and Moriarty.  Also the essential chemistry is still there.  Holmes’ eccentric yet magnetic personality pulls Watson into the adventure.  Thankfully Bollers didn’t repeat the Watson of the Rathbone/Bruce era and gives Watson an actual brain.

While the storyline itself is good, the artwork really pulls you in to this adventure.  Artist Rick Leonardi, not only provides a great landscape background for this story but he gives us two distinctive characters.  Sherlock’s clothing sets him apart from the other characters but he doesn’t seem out of place.  Watson compliments Sherlock enough to show they are a team but definitely with his own personality.

I only have one complaint about this series, the issues are too short.  Both currently available issues leave you with a cliffhanger, and cliffhangers drive me nuts.   I think it would’ve been better if these were combined as one issue, then it wouldn’t be so bad.  I’m hoping that this is just because they are teaser issues and with issue three we get a bit more story before left hanging on the cliff again.

Check out this new series here.
