Movie watcher pro-tip, don’t judge a movie by it’s poster. Seeing the poster you would think that Danny Trejo is in the lead role in an action/horror movie with zombies. Well Trejo is in this feature but he’s a secondary at best. There is action I guess, but not an overabundance and most of it’s pretty lame.
Rise of the Zombies is when mediocre movies happen to decent actors. It’s produced by The Asylum so I should’ve known better than to expect anything good to come from it. The plot, such that it is, zombie apocalypse is upon us and a group of people have escaped to Alcatraz island. Dr. Halpern (LeVar Burton) is working on ways to combat zombie virus. One day we find out that apparently zombies can swim or something because the zombies overrun the island forcing our group to escape for another rumored safe place. However, part of the group wants to seek out another doctor who is rumored to have created an anti-zombie vaccine.
After watching this I wanted to start a Kickstarter campaign to produce a decent movie for LeVar Burton to be in. This was insulting, his attempt to be professional even with a crappy script just made it look like he was hamming it up. Trejo made the most of a bad script like he usually does, but even he is wasted for the most part. This movie was made for TV and I guess it lived up to that expectation, barely. It’s not as horrible as it is just boring and slow. Bored teenagers with cellphone cameras could come up with something way scarier.
