I was already looking forward to watching this movie because I’ve been on an Ian McShane and Ray Winstone kick lately. What I didn’t realize was that after this film, I would have another layer of respect for the acting ability of Ben Kingsley.
So Sexy Beast, how can you not love a movie with that title, is about crooks, former crooks, a heist, and Don Logan (Ben Kingsley); one of the most brutal, insane, and darkly funny, psychopaths I seen on screen. Before I get more into the movie I’ve got to talk about Ben Kingsley. Oh my god his character is just so, so … spastic at first you are thinking he’s just a moron, then it gets scary. I would never want to meet anyone like him in real life.
Unfortunately Gary “Gal” Dove has too. See Gal (Ray Winstone) used to be a safecracker, but he gave it up and retired to a nice house in Spain. But he’s needed to help pull off this huge heist in England. Now, if you call him up and ask him, he’s going to of course say no. So Don Logan, a former associate, flies to Spain to interrogate… I mean ask personally. A lot of stuff happens and Gal has very little choice really but to agree to work the job.
Now don’t get me wrong this movie is not all about Kingsley. Even without his manic character this movie would still have been one damn good heist movie. Think of him as icing on the cake, lots and lots of crazy icing. Ray Winstone also puts in an excellent performance as the conflicted Gal and well it goes mostly without saying that Ian McShane serves up a nice performance as heist mastermind Teddy Bass. Bass is also nuts but more in a smooth sociopath kind of way.
Also, fair warning, this movie is brutal and the language, well it’s not for children. But don’t let that stop you from seeing arguably one of the best mixture of British syndicate and heist movies I’ve seen in awhile.
