I always seem to find problems with movies that are written, directed and lead acted by the same person. See my previous review of Medium Raw. I just feel that sometimes you need someone to tell you “Hey this really isn’t working right.” Such is the case with Purification. This movie stars Joe Ciminera (writer and director) as Brad Kirkpatrick, a jerk of a real estate investor, who almost gets hit by a car. Or does he? Anyway as he continues on with his day he notices things aren’t quite right and people are being very strange. Fitzpatrick finally realizes that he is in some kind of purgatory and only has 24 hours to redeem himself and how he’s lived his life. Think A Christmas Carol without the colorful flashbacks and anything resembling spirits or joy.
This movie isn’t bad, it’s dull. It feels very monotonous even when there are arguments, screaming and such. It is classified as horror but except for a couple weird actions its only remotely scary if you allow your imagination to co-write the script. I could see where he was going with this, I really could, but Mr. Ciminera shouldn’t have tried to juggle multiple jobs. I think collaboration may have saved this film.
