I’ve been meaning to watch this movie for a long time, luckily it wasn’t a disappointment. If I’m going to watch a teen movie it’s going to be a warped one. This promised to be a twisted little dark comedy. Besides it had Pam Grier in there somewhere.
Jawbreaker is about the in crowd, social climbing, and death. Reagan High School is pretty much run by the foursome of Julie (Rebecca Gayheart), Marcie (Julie Benz), Liz (Charlotte Roldan), and Courtney (Rose McGowan). On Liz’s birthday her friends decide to kidnap her and take her out on an adventure as a surprise. The problem is their method, in addition to taping her mouth shut, Courtney also shoves a jawbreaker, you know that big ass ball of candy you can’t bite into, in there as well. The results are not pretty. Now they have to pretend that they know nothing about what happened to Liza and set a scene to make it look like someone else killed her.
Liz’s death not only changes the social order of the group but it changes them in other ways as well. Some become or at least try to become better people, others just become a bigger… witch than before.
I really like this movie, it reminds me of a lot of other teen movies, but better. You can see the ending coming a mile away but that’s okay, it was never trying to be fine cinema. McGowan is perfectly suited as the head… witch. She pulls off snotty and in-control so well. Gayheart is okay but in these kind of movies you don’t expect much from the goody two shoes. My favorite character is Fern Mayo (Judy Greer), the school outcast who discovers what really happened to Liz and uses this to her advantage. Fern changes the most of anyone in the movie and Greer really pulls off a believable transition. Pam Grier‘s role is not that big but still good as the Det. Vera Cruz who is investigating Liz’s untimely demise.
Is it high school reality? Some, but it’s usually never this cut and dry, but everyone has met a Courtney. Hopefully they were able to survive the encounter, poor Liz didn’t.
