Safety Not Guaranteed – Movie 68 of 365

09 Mar

ImageThis movie is not what it seems and neither are the characters.  The basic synopsis it that three magazine reporters go to do a story on a man who places an ad in the paper for a companion for time travel.  Must bring own weapon, safety not guaranteed.

Jeff (Jake Johnson), a jerk of a person and reporter, drags interns Darius (Aubrey Plaza) and Arnau (Karan Soni) off to find out who this person is and basically find out if he’s stupid or crazy, or both. After Jeff is unsuccessful in talking with Kenneth (Mark Duplass), the guy who placed the ad, he enlists Darius to befriend Kenneth and get the story. The story she finds is not exactly the one she’s expecting. In fact all three reporters are changed by the search for this story.

It’s an interesting film.  Figuring out if Kenneth is crazy or truthful takes up the majority of the plot but the side stories are interesting as well.  It’s not really a comedy, but not so deep as to be considered dramatic.  There needs to be a good word for the in-between.

How did you feel about the ending? I just watched this on Netflix and really enjoyed it. I wasn’t crazy about the subplot involving Jake Johnson’s character but I thought everything converged pretty nicely there at the end.

I really liked the ending, it was only a tad hokey but it went along well with the movie. The subplot with Jake Johnson’s character could’ve been better. I could see where they were going with it but in the end it was just as flaky as he was.
