This is a beautiful mix of myth and reality, of hard times and better times than others thing you should have in this situation. I loved this movie but I’m not sure everyone will. It’s not a straightforward tale. Sometimes it’s more feel than see. Quvenzhane Wallis does stand out as the main character Hushpuppy but I think Dwight Henry is very powerful as her dysfunctional father Wink. I love the imagery of life in the Bathtub. Poorer than poor but proud of their place; feeling sorry for those that don’t know to live off the land.
It is hard to write reviews for movies like this because so much is wrapped up into how you feel about certain scenes. Feelings that can’t be put into words. Like whenever Hushpuppy howls or growls, when the teacher gives them a lesson about cave man times; how Wink seems to hate and love his daughter in the same sentence.
I think the best way to watch this movie is don’t think about it. Don’t think about how it’s going resolve itself or why something is happening. Just experience it.
