In honor of its Oscar win for Best Animated Feature Film of the Year, I finally got around to watch this movie. I can’t watch too many animated features in a row lest I become cynical of the formulaic plot. However, I can say for this one for the most part it sets the formula on it’s ear.
My favorite change is there is no guy, prince or otherwise, saving the princess. Merida for the most part is completely on her own to fix the mess she’s made. And what a mess it is. Secondly, Merida’s mother, the queen, though annoying as hell in the beginning is not evil. There is not tragic parental death or evil step-parent as is so often the case.
Also the witch is really funny.
I also like that there isn’t this big physical transformation of the princess. Merida is beautiful and wild at the beginning of the feature and she’s the same beautiful and wild girl at the end. Maybe a little more appreciative and mature, but she’s not shoehorning herself into the fairytale princess, happily ever after look.
It wasn’t the perfect movie but what is, I really can’t point to anything and say hey I didn’t like that. Maybe the movie was a bit rushed but then 1hr 30 is probably the limit for most children.
