I’ve avoided watching this movie for awhile assuming that it was going to be just the same as Season of the Witch since both have the plague, monks, and potential devilry. But this one is so much better in my opinion. First of all it has Sean Bean, who’s mere appearance in a movie seems to improve the quality. I find him a very good actor and no I will not tell you whether he dies in this movie as he’s often known to do.
Black Death is set in the 1300’s when the Bubonic Plague is running rampant. Ulrich (Sean Bean) has been tasked to take a group to investigate a small village untouched by the pestilence. There is rumor that the reason for good health has less to do with being spared by God but association with the devil. Ulrich is unfamiliar with the area and needs a guide. Novice monk Osmund (Eddie Redmayne) quickly volunteers, being of the area and using it as an opportunity to meet with Averill (Kimberely Nixon) a girl he is in love with even though he knows it’s against his holy orders.
This is a very good historic drama. I don’t know how accurate it is but it feels like it should be. It’s gritty, dark, but also touching and thought provoking with more than a couple twists to the story.
