This morning turned on the TV in time to catch the last half of one of my favorite movies, Tommy. Also in time to catch my two favorite songs, I’m Free, and Sally Simpson. If there is a fangirl anthem I think Sally Simpson would be it.
I think we’ve all been Sally Simpson at one point. Obsessing over someone you know you’ll probably never meet, nevertheless have them acknowledge your presence. I can’t remember who my first celebrity crush was but I’m sure it was either a very young Michael Jackson or Donny Osmond. I do remember buying Tiger Beat magazine for the posters of all my favorite celebs, selling the ones I didn’t like to keep feeding my addiction.
In high school I had a friend who was an artist and shared my love of Andrew McCarthy (Class, Pretty in Pink, St. Elmo’s Fire, etc.) . I still have the drawing she did of him for me.
In college my dorm room walls were covered with posters of Michael Stipe of R.E.M., the infamous Christina Applegate snake poster, the movie poster of Winona Ryder in Welcome Home, Roxy Carmichael, and anything that peaked my interest enough to cut out of Rolling Stone magazine.
Now I don’t have posters cause I have Pinterest. My boards are full of actors and musicians that I’ll probably never meet but I obsess over them anyway.
But that’s okay, I’m a self-identify fangirl and proud of it. I don’t think I ever go over the line and it doesn’t effect my daily life too much. And like the line in Sally Simpson goes, “…never mind, your part is to be what you’ll be.”
