Sometimes the mark of a great actor is not how well they deliver a monologue or cry, or act crazy on screen. Sometimes it’s just that they make you forget they are acting. Jennifer Lawrence easily makes you forget she’s acting and that she really is Ree Dolly. The same could be said for John Hawkes who plays her uncle Teardrop.
This movie is a really good drama, there are not really any extreme highs or lows but does a good job of simple storytelling and showing you how things are for some people. I particularly like that they didn’t overact the mountain residents. Often rural residents are presented as a back of backwoods yahoos, drinking and shooting and hollering. This just portrayed them as people living a hard rural life; honestly as well as illegally.
I love the near documentary filming style and integration of the soundtrack throughout and think you definitely should see this film.
